The Ring in the Fish

The wonderful custodians of #FolkloreThursday asked me to write another article for the website. This time, I chose to write about the motif of the ring in the fish, known from the story of Polycrates, and how it has been used in much more recent Norwegian legends.

The Ring in the Fish.

Hans Christian Andersen uses the same motif in his tale, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier". It is also known in an English tale, wherein the ring-eating fish saves a life. Finally, apparently, catching a fish with a ring in its gut is more common than I thought, as this recent news story tells.
