A Coffee-Brew

The Norwegian word for ‘lay-by’ is rasteplass. Historically, a rast is the distance one may comfortably travel by foot before needing to rest: about 9 km.

The Sami have a unit of measurement of about the same distance. They call it a kaffekok, a ‘coffee brew’: the distance one may comfortably travel by foot before needing another cup of coffee.
